Kits for Kandahar! |
![]() |
Approximately 2300 Canadian Forces troops are currently deployed to Afghanistan on OPERATION ARCHER. A Halifax, NS, modeller named Gary Porter of the Halifax Military Modelling Group has initiated a really inspiring project to help coalition forces on deployment to this area of the world. Even though the HMMG is not an IPMS Canada Chapter, this kind of project crosses all party lines and we are therefore bringing the links to you here to help spread the word. The following have articles that describe the program in more detail:.

Hi,
Some friends and myself are putting together a package to send to Gary Porter in
Halifax, who needs to receive donations by July 28th. We'll be sending
ours on July 25th, so if anyone from the Moncton area
(Moncton, Salisbury, Riverview, Dieppe, etc) would like to make a donation they
can contact me and include theirs with our shipment to save on postage.

IPMS Canada's Minister for Chapter Liaison, Gary Barling, put out the word in an e-mail to IPMS Canada's Charter Chapters and we got back a very encouraging response from Iain Fraser, Chapter President of the DH Scale Modellers in Toronto, ON. Iain has given his permission to reproduce this here:

Steve and Gary,
Apparently, I'm further behind in my Cyber modelling and web browsing than I thought. I've seen similar initiatives done by the Americans for their troops, but I was not aware of a Canadian effort.
The deHavilland Scale Modellers received Gary's notice this morning, and since then there has been a flurry of activity. We will be sending a package to the marshalling point in Nova Scotia as soon as our collection is finished. Our sponsoring organization, the deHavilland Employee Sports Club, has also offered to pitch-in in support. It is good to see that all levels of IPMS Canada, as well as non-affiliated members of the modelling community, stand together in this effort. Regardless of the Political, Moral or Economic arguments over Canada's involvement in the Afghan Mission, it's our troops who are over there , doing a tough job under difficult conditions. They deserve our support.
Iain Fraser,
President,
deHavilland Scale Modellers,
A deHavilland Employee Sports Club Chapter.
An IPMS Canada Chapter.
All IPMS Canada Chapters and members are encouraged to participate in the great initiative. If you or your group decide to pitch in and help, please send us a quick note and tell us about it. We'd be happy and proud to acknowledge it here!

Thought I'd send this along to you just to keep you in the loop with the end results of our efforts to support Gary Porter's "Kits for Kandahar" initiative. We hope that our fellow IPMS chapters (particularly our neighbours at IPMS Toronto - nudge, nudge, hint, hint Harvey/Garfield) will take up the challenge and meet or exceed our level of donations toward this worthy endeavour.
Regards

<kits4kandahar@yahoo.ca> Hello Gary, I am very pleased to let you know that this afternoon the de Havilland Scale Modellers shipped out a package to you, in support of the "Kits for Kandahar" initiative. We are very proud of our members, who stepped up to the plate, donating a total of 36 models of various subjects and scales. Additionally, from the club coffers, approximately $60 of various supplies (eg. paints, cement, brushes, filler, sandpaper, hobby knives, etc.) were purchased and included in the shipment. We even had one of our spouses take up the challenge, and graciously sponsored the purchase of a basic airbrush kit which is included in the shipment. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to you for organizing the worthy endeavour. It is our sincere hope that our troops will find some enjoyment in the kits provided. Regards, |
