Old Business

We received a letter from Aris Pappas, writing on behalf of IPMS/USA.  The subject was the oversight of the 'Best Canadian Subject' judging at the National Convention in Oklahoma City in July.  Based on this ongoing dialogue, plus the recent revelation that there were at least two other Canadian entries at the 2003 Convention, it was decided to avoid further controversy and not award the IPMS Canada award in arrears as discussed in the Aug 2003 minutes.

Since the award was not presented, Randy Lutz raised the issue of recovering our payment from IPMS/USA.  Jamie will explore this avenue.

Further to this issue, it was decided to follow the IPMS/USA plan of tracking the category support for the next two national conventions, and decide then if IPMS Canada's support of this award is worth it.

At IPMS Ottawa's CapCon 2003, the Bob Traversy award, for the Best Japanese Aircraft Subject, went to John Wong of IPMS Toronto for a lovely Val dive-bomber.

This brought to mind that IPMS Canada still owes IPMS Ottawa for the cost of awarding this award.  The Treasurer will send a cheque at his earliest opportunity.

Jamie confirmed with the IPMS Ottawa Executive that IPMS Canada would be sponsoring an award again for CapCon 2005.  Jamie will be talking to IPMS Ottawa about the exact details and criteria for this award.

IPMS Canada had a display at CapCon 2003, where we did some reasonable business.  We picked up six new members, sold a dozen decal sheets, along with a bunch of old RTs from the Archives.

It was observed that our physical display lacked the spit and polish of some of the other club displays.  It was discussed how we could tart it up a bit, but that potential cost will have to be weighed against the number of times we see ourselves using a new display.

A pleasant surprise, we've received letters with several suggestions from the membership for new decal subjects.

RT Editor

RT 28/3 went to the printer on 07 October.

RT 28/4 is well underway, and the Co-Editor team is planning to have it to the printer within four weeks.

Something new will be tried for RT 28/4.  Vic Scheuerman's Hurricane XII article will be supplemented on the website with additional photo coverage of a restored airplane in an Alberta museum.  A link to the website will be listed in the article.

Membership/Circulation

Since last meeting we've picked up 9 new members and approximately 36 renewals.

To print up the next batch of address labels for the 28/3 RT mailing, Jamie, John, and Deb will have to put their collective heads together to overcome a small logistics problem.

We are still waiting on the purchase of the used computer and printer for Deb Lutz to work with the membership database at home.

We are running out of labels for the old printer, so the purchase of the new one is becoming critical.  We have enough old labels to do up to RT 28/4, but that's it.

Marketing

We managed to put on a small display at the IPMS Ottawa CapCon show, which brought a number of friendly faces to the table to sample the merchandise we had to offer.

7.1

Archivist

It's been a quiet month. The Archivist's highlight was refiling the back issues of RT that were pulled out for CapCon in September.

8.1

Chapter Liaison

The Chapter Liaison role's evolution was discussed in the wake of the impact of the Internet technology.  Most information is passing through the webpage and the role needs some redefinition to keep it viable.

Special Projects

The 442 Sqn decals arrived back from Microscale this week and they look great. Due to personal commitments and a mould problem, Sid's production of the resin louvres has lagged behind a bit.  It is confidently anticipated that the sales ad will go out with RT 28/4, about a month from now.

Long-time member Jim Craik wrote in and asked about possible 1/72 decals from IPMS Canada.  This was discussed and the conclusion is that past sales of 1/72 decals have always been very slow compared to the 1/48 sheets, and we will likely stay with 'safe' products, so as not to be sitting on huge stacks of 1/72 decals, like the 111 and 400 Sqn sheets we still have in stock from a long time ago.
