Some models from
Gary Barling, member # C-0014

Gary Barling is living in Petawawa, Ontario, semi-retired after a long career in the Armour Branch of the CF.  He is still a very active member of IPMS Canada, and regularly makes his way down to IPMS Ottawa meetings.  His models illustrated below just go to show you that we are the only ones stopping ourselves from modelling!

If you would like to see your models on these pages here, just send in some photos and descriptions.

The I-26, a Type B1 submarine of the Imperial Japanese Navy, 1942. This submarine surfaced off Vancouver Island and shelled the Estevan lighthouse in June of 1942, without effect. I-26 was sunk with all hands in Oct, 1944. Whitley Mk. V, modified to train paratroops at Ringway, Manchester, 1943. Members of the 1st Cdn Para Bn almost certainly trained with this aircraft in the fall of 1943. The model is currently on display at the Canadian Airborne Forces Museum, Petawawa. Roden 1/32nd Fokker DR.I Triplane, finished as the aircraft used by Oblt. Lothar von Richthofen in March, 1918. Lothar was the younger brother of Manfred von Richthofen, the famous "Red Baron." Lothar finished the war with 40 victories. Roden 1/32nd scale Fokker DR.I Triplane, finished as the aircraft used by Oblt. Lothar von Richthofen in March, 1918. Lothar was the younger brother of Manfred von Richthofen, the famous "Red Baron." Lothar finished the war with 40 victories.
The PZL P11C is the 1/48th scale Mirage kit that came out in mid-2003. It is finished as an aircraft of 161 Flight, Polish Air Force, in 1939. It is probable that Janusz Zurakowski (CF-105 test pilot) flew this aircraft while with 161 in late 1938. Wagon 3 was done up for a friend of mine who does 15mm Civil War wargaming. Horses and all, the "model" measures less than 3 inches. Wagon markings are a combination of a die-punched red circle (First Division, I Corps, Army of the Potomac, 1863) and lettering via my laser printer. The wagon is "loaded" with balsa boxes and yes, there is plastic in it: the reins are thin plastic tape! Accurate Miniatures 1/48th scale Mustang Ia, backdated to a Mark I using replacement leading edge inserts, nose panel with .50 cal machines guns, and propeller blades and spinner. These come as a modification set from Ultracast. Decals are from Arrow Graphics. The aircraft is from 414 Sqn RCAF, flown by F/O Hills over Dieppe when he scored the first victory recorded by a Mustang machine in August of 1942 A Spitfire Mk.IIb, 306 Sqn, RAF, 1941. Flown by Polish pilot Tadeusz Rolski. The kit is a Tamiya Mk. Vb, backdated using Ultracast resin items: spinner, propeller blades, exhausts, cannon, rudder and fabric ailerons.
The corvette is HMCS Moncton, built for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the city. It sports a camouflage scheme used on the Canadian west coast, and represents the ship as she appeared in the fall of 1944. The model is the Matchbox 1/72nd kit, modified in many ways. Mitsubishi Zero. This is the 1/48 Hasegawa kit, built to replicate the aircraft flown by Lt. Iida at Pearl Harbor. Extras include painted national insignia and carrier markings, and resin/PE folded wingtips. RWD8. 1/48th model based on the Mirage kit. This aircraft was a trainer for the Polish Air Force in the 1930's, and it was on this type of aircraft the Janusz Zurakowski took his training. This model will also join the others in the collection destined for the Zurakowski Centre in Barry's Bay, Ontario. Tornado F.3, Royal Air Force, Gulf War, 1992: 1/72nd scale Wrona. 1/48th scale scratchbuilt model of the Polish training glider used in the 1930's. This model will join the other seven models built for the Zurakowski Centre in Barry's Bay, Ontario
Triceratops - no model number, unit or location, but a LONG time ago! Close to 1/24th scale. The little "time traveler" is placed to provide a sense of the actual size of the beast. (Webmaster note: Legend has it that Gary was actually on-site doing live research of this subject!) The Ram is another 8th NB Hussar vehicle, as it appeared in England. It's a resin kit mated to the suspension and lower hull of the Tamiya M3 Grant. The Sherman is of the 8th New Brunswick Hussars (Princess Louise's), used during the Italian campaign. Pretty much out of the box, with a few extras like the tow cable added. Markings are painted (mask, airbrush) M113A1 - Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1992: 1/35th scale Japanese Submarine - I-16 carrying a midget sub, destined for Pearl Harbor, December, 1941: 1/700th scale
Monogram 1/48 Bf109G-10, built OOB (out of the box), non-standard markings (with a replacement cowling and canopy, overpainted fuselage markings) using EagleCals decals. This a/c was one of many that flew into Allied-controlled airstrips to surrender on 8 May 1945. Built for the sheer fun of it! M4A3E8 Sherman of 'D' Squadron, The Royal Canadian Dragoons, Korea, 1954. "Dolna" is the name of the driver's newly-born daughter. I was able to confirm the models details with the driver, then-Trooper (retired Sergeant) Don McNeil, who had settled in Petawawa The Spit 9 is an OB in 1/72nd scale, an a/c flown in 403 Sqn in 1943/44 This 401 Sqn Spitfire is the 1/48th Hasegawa Mark Vb. It is a presentation aircraft, "Corps of Imperial Frontiersmen," as provided on the kit decal sheet. This is straight out of the box, except for a vacufomed canopy. The cam scheme is at variance with the kit instructions; photos appear to show what I've applied. "Cy's Spitfire" is the 1/72nd Hasegawa Mk. VIII. It represents the aircraft flown by my uncle (601 Sqn RAF, Naples, Italy, 11 March 1944) when he achieved a victory over an FW 190 near Rome. He was RCAF, on loan to the RAF at the time. Custom decals were used for the Sqn codes and the 601 Sqn emblem on the fin.
